16th Annual Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament

BY: Cayman Islands Angling Club / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORY: Past Events

The committee of the 16th Annual Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament wishes to thank the sponsors, captains, anglers and spectators who supported this year’s tournament. This year 167 anglers and 44 boats registered to fish the four days. Anglers journeyed from several countries including the United States and Japan to compete in the tournament and we were pleased to host two visiting boats that travelled to Cayman for the tournament as well as staff from Gaff Magazine and Gaff Life television show.

The tournament kicked off with boat and angler registration on 23 April at The George Town Yacht Club. Fishing immediately followed the CICO Bimini start on the morning of 25 April from Hog Sty Bay for boats fishing in Grand Cayman and the South Side channel for boats fishing in Cayman Brac. Teams weighed their catches each day at the Barcadere Marina between 4:30 and 6:30pm. Despite rough seas on days 2 and 3 all teams braved the weather and were committed to compete. Throughout the four days of fishing anglers weighed in 63 Dolphins, 18 Yellowfin Tuna and 6 Wahoo over the minimum weights. Twelve Blue Marlin were also released over the four fishing days. The tournament came to a close with an awards ceremony at The Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort on April 30th during which over US$120,000 in cash and prizes were awarded for a variety of catches. The team with the most Blue Marlin releases also qualified for the 2014 IGFA World Offshore Championships.

The tournament committee is pleased with the success of this year’s tournament and plan on making next year’s tournament bigger and better.
