Guy Harvey hopes to get anglers hooked on marine conservation efforts.
Harvey, a noted conservationist and marine artist, will stage a public presentation at the George Town Yacht Club on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.
According to a press release from the Cayman Islands Angling Club, the local governing body for competitive fishing, the session will be about the relationship between fishing and conservation efforts.
The statement reads, “The club is hosting its first social of 2014 in the lounge of the Yacht Club. Dr. Guy Harvey will be the guest speaker and will bring us up to speed on the latest endeavors of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation in the Cayman Islands, as well as pertinent issues impacting sport fishing in Cayman. A presentation will be given on matters impacting sport fishing and conservation in Cayman.”
Harvey, born in West Germany and reared in Jamaica, has a storied history in marine conservation. After obtaining a doctorate in fisheries management from the University of the West Indies, he partnered with Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center in Florida to create the Guy Harvey Research Institute in 1999. The institute is devoted to providing scientific research about marine ecosystems around the world.
In Cayman, Harvey has done extensive underwater photography work and is a leading proponent of preserving the endemic Nassau grouper population. His conservation efforts deal largely with endangered species of sharks, marlin and sea turtles among others.
News of Harvey’s presentation comes after Cayman gained more international recognition this month. Local fishing took center stage on NBC Sports’ “Extreme Fishing Adventures.” The show’s initial episodes, which aired on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, focused on Capt. Jimmy Nelson’s experience when he participated in the Cayman First Insurance All Tackle fishing tournament.
Next up on the fishing calendar is the angling club annual general meeting on Feb. 5 and the Barcadere Classic scheduled for March 1-2.
